Job title: Security GuardÂ
Work involves maintaining a safe and secure environment for library patrons and staff, engaging with library patrons, and helping to provide access to resources. Work also involves working closely with the library team to assist with the day-to-day operations of the library.
Key Responsibilities/Functions:
- Make regular rounds of the interior and exterior of the library when able.
- Proactively monitor and respond to disruptive and unauthorized activities, including excessive noise, loitering, theft, and destruction of library property and respond to staff call for assistance.
- Interpret, apply, and communicate library policies to patrons
- Initiate calls for assistance to City Police or Fire as needed.
- Complete Incident Report forms
- Welcome patrons as they enter the library and proactively monitor at time of entrance policy violations
- Maintain awareness of frequent visitors to the library who may require attention
- Engage with patrons spending time in the library, particularly unsupervised children
- Work collaboratively with library staff and team leaders to communicate and address patron behavior issues
- Address issues in the library space, such as throwing out litter left in library, wiping down patron tables, pushing in chairs
- Assists with program set-up and take down
- Assist with library activities and programs, which may include but is not limited to any of the following:
- Cleaning
- Changing garbage
- Tidying library shelves
- Shelf reading
- Shelving materials
- Perform other duties as required
Qualifications and Skills Required:
- A high school diploma or the equivalent
- Knowledge of the economic and social issues facing the City of Jamestown
- Knowledge of community resources (safety, emergency, social services)
- Ability to interact with a diverse population
- Excellent customer service skills; demonstrated team player with excellent interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated personal character, temperament and judgment to effectively respond to incidents directly while remaining calm and composed, or report them to police or other authority as appropriate.
- Strong verbal skills, customer service orientation and the ability to interact with the library patrons, (including young children, adolescents and teens) in a respectful, yet firm manner.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, to learn assigned tasks, and to apply rules appropriately and consistently.
- Ability to create courteous, pleasant first impression of library
- Some computer knowledge
- Initiative, ability to work without supervision
- Excellent listening, verbal and written communication
