(The Fenton Historical Society sponsored a tour of several prominent buildings in Jamestown on August 16, 1991.)

The house is a typical example of the Italian Villa architectural style.  Conspicuous features are the asymmetrical plan and elevation, the dominating tower, the low pitched roof and overhanging bracketed eaves, the porches in re-entrant angles, the jutting bays, the round-headed windows with heavy moldings, and a broken silhouette.

The recently restored Drawing Room typifies the Renaissance Revival Period in the style of carpet, drapes, mirrors, and ceiling pattern.  A family parlor occupies the room across the hall.  A temporary exhibit, a sampling of archival material, demonstrates the wide range of materials contained in the Fenton collection.  In addition, Victorian period rooms and local history exhibits can be seen in the museum.

The home of Civil War Governor, Reuben E. Fenton, was built in 1863.  The members of the Fenton family have been the only residents of the house.  It became the property of the city of Jamestown in 1919 and was used thereafter by veterans' groups, and various social service and municipal organizations.  In 1964 it became the headquarters for the Fenton Historical Society.
